Planning Sri Lanka With Children

Wildlife, beaches, culture and gentle adventure combine beautifully when the pace and experiences are chosen to suit a family holiday.

Sri Lanka is well suited to family travel. Children can see elephants and possibly leopards on safari, ride a scenic train through tea country, swim on the coast and explore ancient sites that feel like an adventure story. The key is pacing.

Long days in the car are the most common cause of tired families. Choose shorter transfers, break up the longer ones with a worthwhile stop, and keep at least one hotel with a pool for a few nights in a row. Private transport with child seats where required makes a real difference.

Combine active mornings with quiet afternoons, and include experiences that engage young travellers directly: a tuk-tuk ride, a turtle hatchery visit, a cooking class or a guided village walk. Climbs such as Sigiriya can be optional for younger children, with the surrounding gardens and museum as alternatives.

Sharing dietary needs, ages and interests before travel allows the itinerary, rooms and activities to be arranged in advance. Food is generally family friendly, and mild dishes are easy to request.
