After the heat of the lowlands, the Central Highlands feel like another country. Temperatures drop, the air turns fresh, and rolling tea estates replace paddy fields and palm groves. Many travellers pass through the hill country in a single day; those who stay longer usually say it was the highlight of the trip.
Nuwara Eliya, often called Little England, keeps a colonial character in its cottages, gardens and golf course, while the surrounding estates offer factory visits and tastings. Ella, further south-east, is a relaxed base for walks to Little Adam’s Peak and Nine Arches Bridge and for views across the Ella Gap.
The train between Kandy and Ella is one of the most scenic rail journeys in Asia. Seats on popular services can sell out well in advance, so it is best arranged as part of a planned itinerary rather than on the day.
Two nights in each of two locations is a good rhythm. It leaves time for a morning walk, an estate visit and a slow afternoon without the constant packing and repacking that shorter stays involve. Mornings are usually clearest, and it is sensible to pack a warm layer and light rain protection.
