Sri Lanka packs a remarkable range of wildlife into a small island: leopards in Yala and Wilpattu, elephants gathering in Minneriya and Kaudulla, blue whales off the south coast and a rich variety of endemic birds. Each location has its own best season, so the right choice depends on what you most want to see.
Yala offers the best-known chance of seeing leopards, and the drier months generally make animals easier to find around remaining water sources. The elephant gatherings in the north-central parks are typically strongest in the drier part of the year. Whale watching from the south coast is usually best in the calmer months, roughly from the end of the year into spring.
A responsible safari is as important as a well-timed one. Choose operators and drivers who respect park rules, keep a sensible distance from animals and avoid crowding a sighting. Early morning game drives are quieter and cooler, and travelling in smaller groups reduces pressure on the animals and improves the experience for guests.
Good preparation helps too: neutral clothing, sun protection, binoculars and patience. Wildlife cannot be scheduled, and the most rewarding safaris are the ones where guests are relaxed enough to enjoy the whole landscape rather than only the headline sighting.
