Sigiriya
Rising dramatically above the plains of the Cultural Triangle, Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka's most recognisable heritage landmarks and a defining stop on almost every RIZ journey.
The Icon of Sri Lanka's Cultural Landscape.
Sigiriya, or "Lion Rock," is a fifth-century royal citadel built on top of a 200-metre granite outcrop, ringed by water gardens, boulder gardens and terraced landscaping that still impress visitors more than 1,500 years later. The climb to the summit passes the famous Sigiriya frescoes and the giant lion's-paw entrance before opening onto the ruins of the royal palace and sweeping views across the surrounding jungle.
Most RIZ itineraries base guests nearby for one or two nights, allowing an early-morning climb before the heat of the day, followed by time to explore Dambulla's cave temples or a safari at a neighbouring national park.
