Galle
A UNESCO-listed fortified city where Dutch colonial architecture, boutique hotels and independent shops sit inside 17th-century ramparts overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Heritage Beside the Indian Ocean.
Built by the Portuguese and expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century, Galle Fort remains one of the best-preserved examples of a fortified colonial city in Asia. Cobbled streets lined with converted merchant houses now hold boutique hotels, galleries, cafés and design shops, all within walking distance of the ramparts and lighthouse.
Galle is usually paired with time on the beaches further along the south coast, making it a natural base for guests looking to slow down after the Cultural Triangle or hill country.
